If a website is slow or poorly made, it won’t get a good position in search results. If a page takes more than a few seconds to load, many people will close the tab/site and find a website that’s not so slow.

There are many factors that effect speed.

  • The server itself needs to be fast
  • The server also needs to support cache engines
  • A caching system needs to be in place on the website application and be properly set up
  • JavaScript should be minimal and loaded only as needed
  • Images need to be optimized for small file size and converting them to webp is good practice

This website used to have a fairly heavy weight theme yet even then I got good speed/optimization scores. I’m now using an fse theme for use with the WordPress beta feature of fse – full site editing.
